Waves V7 under Logic 64-bit

January 2010

Waves understands that 64-bit compatibility is very important to many of our users, especially those who run extremely large sample-based instruments which benefit from the additional RAM available under 64-bit. Waves has an extensive product line which currently includes over 100 plug-ins, and making each and every one of them 64-bit compatible is a massive undertaking. We are making every effort to complete this process as swiftly as possible, yet do not want to commit to an unrealistic release date which may lead to user disappointment in the future. Naturally, we hope to make 64-bit compatibility available prior to 2011. We thank you for your patience and understanding.

If you plan to use Logic 64-bit and use Waves V7 plug-ins, please read the following important notes:

For several years now, Waves processing on Native systems has used 64-bit floating point precision algorithms that run on 32-bit operating systems. Our testing has shown that moving to a 64-bit OS will not improve sound performance or quality.

Waves V7 plug-ins have been tested under Logic 64-bit; general functionality and session compatibility have been correct in the majority of cases. However, performance shows no improvement, and we haven't yet found any significant benefit to using our processors in a 64-bit operating system. In fact, they actually run slower than under 32-bit hosts, and, in some cases, CPU performance may actually suffer.

Waves is already working on native 64-bit versions of our plug-ins, but as our code base is so large and extensive, we do not anticipate full support before 2011. While we expect to make significant progress during 2010, an ETA will be published once we have better sense of the development schedule. Apple has provided a bridge solution that lets you run 32-bit plug-ins on the 64-bit OS, but our testing has not found its implementation to be up to Apple's usual engineering standards, with many bugs.

While we will do our best to resolve all compatibility issues as soon as possible, we are further limited by the amount and manner in which support is provided by Apple. Unlike other application developers, Apple does not provide Waves with pre-release support to ensure compatibility when they launch a product.

Please note: Waves will not accept any returns nor issue any refunds due to Logic 64-bit usage. Waves strongly recommends that users continue to work in 32-bit mode until further notice, especially if you are engaged in mission critical tasks.

We have already found several malfunctions and there are probably many more. We advise reading through the following list of those issues we have identified so far:

  • "AU bridge" crashes when switching from one Dorrough GUI to a different Dorrough GUI while Dorrough is reading automation.

  • Waves GUIs stop responding after switching between GUI's.

  • Waves ReWire doesn't work. (Waves Tune doesn't see ReWire.)

  • Morphoder doesn't receive MIDI.

  • Morphoder sidechain doesn't work on instrumental tracks. (Sidechain input doesn't receive input.)

  • AU bridge issue: More than one GUI cannot be opened.

  • Logic 9.1 in 64-bit mode does not scan Waves plug-ins if they are not cached in the AU cache. (If you have not opened Waves plug-ins in Logic before this version, Logic 64bit will not scan Waves plug-ins) .
